By Opting for a cheap web designer, will you get what you pay for?

It is often said that you get what you pay for and in many cases that is entirely correct. For example, you wouldn't expect to pay £10 to a dentist and expect him to make a good job of straightening your teeth would you?

The same can be said, to some degree, with website designers; however, there are exceptions and different reasons for a whole host of cost variations for a website and we will look at some of these here.

Too Cheap?

If you go right to the very bottom end of the market, the ones where sites are being done for say £100, then you really shouldn't expect a great site and even less so, a great service. These designers are either young kids who may possibly produce a decent site but woe betide you when you want something changing a few months down the line, or alternatively, the work may be outsourced to countries such as India where the work is done extremely cheaply.

Of course, this doesn't necesarily mean that you will get poor quality although you very well may. It does mean though that communication of ideas and problems can be very difficult indeed and is likely to result in a great deal of frustration and quite possibly a site that you are not happy with.

Of course, there are also the real 'baddies' including a company who we heard about recently who built a site for a client and charged around £100 but although the site looked ok, they soon filled it full of adverts and spam making it highly unprofessional.

Do I need to pay a lot?

If you are looking for a high level site with many features, you may expect to pay in the region of £4000 to £5000 for these potentially. For newcomers though or someone who wants a simple basic site to help get their business going, this is uneccesary and a basic site will suffice, probably for at least 2 or 3 years as the business develops ... or not!
